It’s that one time of the year, apart from the Melbourne Cup, that Australian’s all over the country band together and celebrate.
No, we’re not talking the footy finals or the cricket. We’re talking about Australia Day!
Around 245 years ago, Captain James Cook sailed past the a cluster of Islands on the east coast of Australia and a large white sandy passage on the Sunday of the feast of Pentecost, or Whitsun, as it was also referred.
To commemorate the occasion James Cook names the passage the Whitsunday Passage.
Unbeknown to him, it was technically Whit-Monday as the International date Line had not yet been established.
Technically the group of islands themselves are the Cumberland Islands, however the islands became better known as the Whitsunday Islands by visitors, and the name stuck.
Today the Whitsunday Island’s are one of Australia’s most popular tourism destinations, and while many of the islands remain national park, a few of the islands such as Hamilton Island, Long Island and Hayman Island have become a tropical paradise for visitors, both Australian and International.
To celebrate Captain Cook’s discovery and naming of the islands, the Whitsundays is a popular place to celebrate the occasion on the 26th January, known as Australia Day.
There are plenty of Australia day festivities planned for the Whitsundays this year, with a number of venues on Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach putting on some special celebrations.
The Whitsunday Sailing Club has some great entertainment planned, as well as plenty of activities for the kids, and the Whitsunday regional Council’s Australia Day Awards.
There is sure to be a great fireworks show in the evening to finish the special day of celebrations.
